NCFF Launches "Not Your Average Folk" Contest for 2025

Seeking North Carolina's Most Original Performers in Celebration of Next-Gen Folk Artistry

GREENSBORO, NC – May 27, 2025 – The NC Folk Festival is calling for North Carolina's most innovative and boundary-pushing performers to compete in the 2025 "Not Your Average Folk" contest. This unique competition celebrates artists who honor folk traditions while exploring new creative territories, offering emerging talent a platform to showcase their original work and win significant performance opportunities.

The contest, which opened submissions on May 26, invites performers whose "roots run deep or sound breaks every mold" to demonstrate how folk music continues to evolve in exciting new directions. From traditional acoustic storytellers to genre-blending innovators, the competition seeks artists who embody the spirit of folk music while pushing its boundaries.

"The Not Your Average Folk contest shows that folk traditions can grow in exciting new directions—without losing their roots," said Jodee Ruppel, executive director and chief development officer for the North Carolina Folk Festival. "It's all about honoring where we've been while celebrating where we're going."

The competition builds on last year's success, which recognized artists who demonstrated folk music's continued relevance and adaptability. "Winning last year was an honor and a title I carry proudly,” said King M Dot, the 2024 winner. “It was a beautiful experience that opened many doors for me. It truly affirmed my belief that folk music isn't just one genre, but rather a shared mantra: music for the people, by the people."

Winners will receive career-advancing opportunities designed to elevate their artistry and expand their reach:

  • First Place receives a coveted performance slot Saturday morning at the 2025 NC Folk Festival, a 10-hour recording session with Crimson Moon studios, and featured "Artist Spotlight" coverage across the festival's newsletter and social media platforms.

  • Second Place winners earn an official performance slot, a 4-hour recording session with Crimson Moon, and "Artist Spotlight" recognition.

  • Third Place and Honorable Mention recipients also receive performance opportunities and promotional support through the festival's marketing channels.

The contest is open to North Carolina residents aged 18 and older who are not currently represented by major industry entities. Solo artists and groups are welcome, with the requirement that at least half of group members reside in North Carolina. The submission window closes June 13 at 11:59 PM EST. The top four finalists will be announced June 30, launching a public voting phase that concludes July 18. Final winners will be revealed July 21.

Complete contest rules and application details are available through the official submission form. Organizers emphasize the importance of reviewing all eligibility requirements before applying.

The "Not Your Average Folk" contest reinforces the NC Folk Festival's commitment to supporting emerging artists while celebrating the dynamic evolution of folk music traditions.
