Busk Around and Find Out

NC Folk Festival Busking Program

Got an acoustic set, a suitcase drum, a fiddle that’s seen some things, or harmonies that stop people mid-walk?

Good. We’re looking for you.

The North Carolina Folk Festival is bringing busking into the heart of the Makers Marketplace for 2026, creating small-but-mighty performance spaces where music happens up close, unexpected moments unfold, and festival-goers stumble into their new favorite artist.

This isn’t a giant stage with pyro and LED walls.
This is folk at street level.

Whether you play old-time, indie folk, bluegrass, jazz, soul, Latin, Americana, world music, roots, or something completely impossible to label, we want performances that feel alive, human, and connected.

what you get

Selected buskers will receive:

  • A scheduled performance slot of up to 3 hours

  • A designated performance space inside the Makers Marketplace

  • Tent coverage and chairs provided by the Festival

  • A shared whiteboard to display:

    • performance times

    • social handles

    • QR codes / digital tipping info

  • Promotion through the Festival app, schedule, map, and social media spotlights when possible

And yes, you keep all your tips. Cash. Venmo. Whatever keeps the strings changed and the gas tank full.

THE GROUND RULES

  • Acoustic Means Acoustic
No amplification of any kind. If it plugs in, powers on, or rattles nearby jewelry displays from 40 feet away… it’s probably not busking.

  • Keep It Marketplace-Friendly
Performances should be appropriate for general audiences and maintain a welcoming environment for all ages.

  • Stay Within Your Slot
Buskers will be assigned scheduled performance windows and designated locations. Please arrive 15-20 minutes early and wrap on time so the next performer can slide in smoothly.

  • Bring Your Own Setup
You bring instruments and any personal setup needs. We’ll provide the tent space, chairs, and shared signage board.

  • No Merch Sales
Tips? Absolutely. Merch table? Not through this program.

faqs

  • Nope. All buskers must apply in advance so we can keep things organized, balanced, and fair for everyone.

  • Still no. Even tiny ones. This program is fully unplugged.

  • You can absolutely share preferences in your application, and we’ll do our best to accommodate them. Final scheduling is determined by the Festival.

  • Let us know ahead of time. We’ll try to work with you, but preference may be given to performers who can commit to the full slot.

  • Yep. As long as everything stays manageable and within your scheduled space and time.

  • The performance spaces will be tented, but performers should still come prepared to protect instruments and gear from weather.

  • You do. Buskers are responsible for transportation, parking, and load-in/load-out, though the Festival will provide maps and directions to help make arrival easier.

  • We’ll include busking schedules and spotlights where possible across the app, schedule, map, and social channels. But definitely hype yourself up too.

  • A designated staff member or volunteer will be assigned to the marketplace area during the Festival. Day-of contact information will be shared with selected performers.
